In June 1982 at the young age of 40 years and 22 years into my career as a firefighter in the Hertfordshire Fire Service, I took up the sport that I had always been interested in, scuba diving. This sport did not come easily to me to start with, after time, progress with training and a number of dives under my belt, undertaking many British Sub Aqua Club courses, in October 1994 I obtained my Advanced Instructor Qualification, equivalent to a Three Star CMAS diver.
It was in 1983 when I first visited the Maltese Islands with my diving club, this was only due to the fact another member was unable to make the trip to Malta I filled the vacant space, the trip was great, I was hooked, loved the islands and the blue seas which surround them.
Since then, Sue and I have visited these Islands over one hundred times, during this time I have completed over two and a half thousand dives in these waters So many visits, so many friendships, so many stories, these islands have become part of our life.
In the early days while I completed my log book between dives, not only with the dive details, but what I had seen, also sketches of the underwater terrain, caves, wrecks and reefs. After retiring from the Fire Service in 1997 and during one of the many visits to the islands with my wife Sue, my dive buddy, Chris, suggested I should maybe make this into a book. We used the lump sum I received on retirement to publish the first book, hence in 2002 A Guide to Shore Diving the Maltese Islands was created followed by Scuba Diving Malta Gozo Comino in 2006 and the rest is history.
This is my fifth edition and the last; it would not have been possible to produce these guides without the help and support of my wife Sue and many others who both live and visit the islands, too many to mention, but they know who they are! It has taken much longer to produce than expected, but life gets in the way sometimes!
If you decide to purchase a copy, hopefully you will enjoy what you find within the pages and it will enhance your diving experience in the Maltese Islands.
